Wedding Dress Inspiration- Julie Andrews as Maria

Motion Pictures has and always have been a source of fashion inspiration since its golden age in the 1930s. This is especially true when a film has a wedding scene which treats the audience to a stunning venue, some lovely music and, of course, the protagonist walking down the aisle in a spectacular dress. These romantic scenes fuels the viewers’ ideas for their dream weddings whether they are engaged or not!

Film critics wouldn’t discuss the most iconic wedding costumes without mentioning Maria’s gown in the 1965 picture ‘The Sound of Music’. Although the story is set in 1938, costume designer Dorothy Jeakins gave a stylish, modern spin on the garments for the mid 1960’s audience. The apparel were adored by fans and even gained Jeakins an Academy Award win for best costume.

Maria, played by Julie Andrews, wore a full length dress made of firm silk shantung which features a high standing collar, long sleeves and a fit and flare silhouette. The A-line skirt is combined with a long, gathered train attached to the upper hip ready for the aisle. The bridal look is completed with a green floral crown and a long plain veil.

This dress stands the test of time with its unembellished style and it was even sold on auction at $23,040 in 2013. For those who love Maria’s number can replicate the look with a mikado dress like the image below, This fabric is a popular choice for brides with its nice sheen that makes an impact with or without added trim. While mikado gowns look fabulous on its own, it can also be accessorised with a satin edge veil to add some drama to the bridal look.
